In the April issue of Injury (International Journal of the Care of the Injured), official journal of the British Trauma Society, there is a study showing the advantages of using ILIZAROV external fixation. This study out of Poland determined that when treating osteoarthritis and deformities of the ankle joint, using ILIZAROV external fixators as compared to internal fixation resulted in superior ankle fusion rates and a lower rate of adjacent joint OA and ankle joint misalignment.

These compelling data differentiate Smith & Nephew’s ILIZAROV external fixation within the circular framing market.
Summary:
ILIZAROV external fixation was compared to internal fixation to evaluate the results of the rate of union, rate of adjacent joint arthritis, and malalignment of the ankle joint.
ILIZAROV external fixation is better for patients with poor bone quality, larger deformities, and shortening of limbs compared to internal fixation.
ILIZAROV external fixation demonstrated lower prevalence of adjacent-joint osteoarthritis and ankle joint misalignment compared to internal fixation.
Ankle fusion was achieved by 100% (all 29) of patients who received the ILIZAROV fixator and achieved by 87.9% (29 of 33) of patients with internal fixation, a statistically significant superiority (p < 0.05) in the fusion rate of ILIZAROV external fixation over internal fixation.
