Hydroactive dressings and serum proteins: an in vitro study

Achterberg V, Welling C, Meyer-Ingold W. Hydroactive dressings and serum proteins: an in vitro study. Journal of Wound Care 1996; 5: 2.

Objectives
To obtain information about the compatibility of various dressings with the serum proteins that are thought to be relevant to wound healing.

Materials and Methods
Artificial wound fluid was incubated with different dressings and concentrations of total protein, albumin, immunoglobulin and growth factors were measured after one day of incubation.

Number and Type of Patients
In-vitro study.

Protocol and Duration of Study
Pieces of dressing were incubated in a filter chamber with artificial wound fluid (human plasma) for 22 hours at room temperature.

Results
CUTINOVA◊ Hydro exhibited a significant increase in total protein, albumin, IgG and all growth factors tested. Comfeel Ulcer Dressing, Varihesive E and ALLEVYN ◊ showed no deviations from control values.

Conclusion
CUTINOVA Hydro showed an approximately two-fold increase over control values in the concentration of all proteins tested, indicating a selective absorption of water by this dressing.
