ICD-10 Procedure Codes for Smith+Nephew OXINIUM™ Oxidized Zirconium Implants Used in Hip and Knee Replacements
Effective October 1, 2017, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) granted new ICD-10 PCS procedure codes for oxidized zirconium on polyethylene hip and knee implants. CMS considered OXINIUM’s unique material properties, clinical data, and public input in its decision to create new ICD-10 PCS codes.
Currently, OXINIUM is only manufactured by Smith+Nephew. Smith+Nephew’s OXINIUM implants are recognized as separate and distinct bearing surfaces used in hip and knee replacement procedures. Government and private payers, joint registries, researchers, hospitals and many others now can track this bearing surface separately from other bearing surfaces. To ensure appropriate tracking and resource accuracy, hospitals, registries and other tracking organizations should ONLY use the ICD-10-PCS codes listed below when reporting oxidized zirconium on polyethylene hip and knee implants used in total joint replacement procedures.
