The system consists of a device, a canister and a wound dressing kit. The dressing isplaced on the wound bed and covered with a clear film. Once sealed, it is attached tothe device through tubing and a canister. The device then draws fluid from the woundinto the canister. The clear film helps to prevent bacteria from entering the dressing. It may improve blood flow to the wound, which will help it to heal.
The first time the therapy device is turned on, you might feel a slight pulling ordrawing sensation. The level of discomfort may vary between patients. If youexperience any pain, please speak to your nurse or doctor for advice.
Your clinician will tell you how often your dressing needs to be changed. Most dressingwill need to be changed 2–3 times a week, but in some cases it may be more often. This will depend on the size, type, drainage and position of your wound.
In some cases, you might feel slight discomfort during dressing changes, particularlyduring wound cleaning (which can vary based on type and location). If you feel anydiscomfort, please tell the person changing your dressing. Dressings should only beapplied, changed or removed by a healthcare professional.
The device should be level with the dressing/wound site or slightly higher.
Patient can usually move around, but this will depend on the position of the wound, the rest of your treatment and recommendations from your nurse or doctor. If you canmove around, the device can be unplugged and operate using battery back-up for upto 24 hours.
The device and power supply are electronic and cannot come into contact with water. If water or other liquids get into the device, turn it off and contact your clinician. When bathing or showering, you must disconnect the device and protect both ends ofthe tubing using the tethered caps. You will need to reconnect to the device as soon asyou have finished showering or washing. Connect the tube back to the canister andturn the device on. The clear film on top of the wound is water resistant. You canshower or wash with dressings in place, as long as you do not soak them.
Contact your healthcare professional if you have any other questions.
